Natural Organic Food, Is It For You?
Have you walked by the organic food section of your grocery store and wondered, why do people pay more for food that is called organic? You may or may not even know the difference between organic and non organic foods. Basically a food that is labeled as organic is free of chemicals, antibiotics, and growth hormones. So what organic really means is that food is 100% natural.
There are 3 main reasons why people eat organic food even though this type of food costs more.
Better Health
The first reason that individuals choose organic foods is that they are potentially healthier. When you eat food that is laden with chemicals and pesticides, you have a higher risk of developing health problems such as cancer. Studies indicate that if you eat a normal apple (after it was washed), you are still consuming around nine different types of pesticides. When you eat an organic food, it will be free of these toxic pesticides. There is also a debate as to whether these organic foods have more nutrients than normal food. Some studies show that these foods have more nutrients and then there are other studies that do not indicate this fact at all. In any case if you choose organic foods, you will likely be getting less toxic chemicals in your diet.
Better Environment
Other people that consume organic foods are ones that are concerned about the environment. When a food is farmed organically, chemical fertilizers and pesticides are not used in the farming process. The yields are not as good but it is better for the soil and water conservation as well as reduce pollution. By choosing to eat organic food, you are indirectly doing a small part in protecting the environment.
It Tastes Better
The next reason that individuals choose to buy organic foods is that they taste better. Now do they really taste better? Some people say yes others say no. Does organic food really taste better? The difference in taste is more pronounce in certain foods, not all. Some of the foods that may taste better are chicken, bananas, strawberries, celery, milk and carrots does taste better when they are organic.
Some polls show that a majority of people believe that organic food benefits the environment and health but only a small percentage of individuals are actually buying this type of food. The main reason for this is because this food can cost up to three times as much as the non-organic foods. However there are ways to get organic foods at a lower price. Here are some suggestions
- Clubs or co-ops
- Directly from farmers
- Buy in bulk
- Store brands instead of name brands
- Plant your own organic garden
- Buy in season
- Only buy certain foods organically (the ones known to be really bad for you)
- Don’t have to switch over to organic food 100%.
Here are 12 foods that may have a high level of contamination: peach, apple, sweet bell pepper, celery, nectarine, strawberries, cherries, kale, lettuce, imported grapes, carrot and pear. So if you want to slowly switch over to organic foods without killing your budget, then you may want to start out with these foods.
So is it worth switching over to organic foods? It is really up to you but if you do switch you will likely be eating foods that are better for you and the environment.
